Downsizing your home can sound like a huge endeavor, even if you simply want to downsize all the items in your life. You may be moving into a new, smaller home or you may be trying to make more room in your current home. In either case, you’re likely to find yourself swimming in boxes, surrounded by your items and wondering how you acquired so much stuff. Take a deep breath. You can do this; just follow our easy guide to downsizing your home.
Step One: Imagine Everything Broken
A Thai meditation master once picked up a glass and called it broken. “When I understand that the glass is already broken, every moment with it is precious,” he said. This message is often used to make people feel more comfortable with loss, but it is also a good way to look at your possessions as you downsize. Just as every moment with that glass was precious for the Thai master, so should you value your items. If everything you own was suddenly broken, which items would you replace first? That group of items should be at the top of your to-keep list. Likewise, anything you wouldn’t replace can probably be given away.
Step Two: Choose Large Items Strategically
Too many big, bulky pieces of furniture will make even the largest home seem small. Think about your items and measure the area of your home or new home. Map it out on a piece of paper. If you want to be exact, measure your furniture and make 2D-shapes based on their dimensions. Place these paper shapes around your blueprint to see where things go. Rearrange until you have all the space you desire. Likely, you’ll have 2D-shapes left off the paper, representing furniture you don’t need.
Don’t worry about throwing out items that are useful. Downsizing your home is about keeping what you need, not keeping every item that still functions. Consider having a yard sale or selling items online. Keep only the items you really need.
Step Three: Have a Purpose for Everything
Defining a purpose for everything is especially wise if you’re moving into a smaller home. Don’t let any item sit in your home without reason. Avoid having a box of random stuff. Be ruthless while downsizing your home. If there’s not a reason to own the item then it’s time to let go.
Remember, you don’t have to throw everything in the trash. Consider recycling, giving away or selling items you no longer need.
Step Four: Find a Mover You can Trust
Finding a quality mover is a must, especially if you need long distance movers. Be sure you know the signs a mover trying to scam you and check a company’s record with the Better Business Bureau. National Van Lines has an A+ record with the BBB and professionals across the country ready to help you pack and move.
