How do I Take Care of Plants During a Move?

Most plants cannot survive a long trip in a moving van because of the extreme temperatures and stagnant air. If you’re bringing houseplants with you to a new home, transport them in a temperature-controlled environment, such as your car.

If you are moving to a new state, be sure to research local regulations on plants. Arizona, Florida and California have particularly strict guidelines. Many states require that you use sterilized potting soil, which you can purchase at most lawn and garden shops.

If you can’t bring your potted plants with you, take a few cuttings instead. Wrap the cuttings in wet moss and newspaper to help them survive a few days of travel, and then easily replant them at your new home.
