How to Ship a Car or Vehicle

By National Van Lines
04/16/2015

A 2008 study found Americans have, on average 2.28 vehicles per household. Families with more than one car may want to consider shipping their extra vehicles with their household goods during a long distance move. This ensures only one gas tank to fill and only one person needs to drive at any given time. If you are planning to move across the country, it is highly recommended you seek out the services of a quality moving company, in good standing with the Better Business Bureau, which has the expertise necessary to ship vehicles along with the rest of your shipment.

Once you have chosen a professional moving company to assist you in your move, you need to make sure your car is ready for the trip ahead. The following are the essentials steps you need to take in order to ship a car across the country.

Step 1: Clean Everything

Inside and out, make sure your car is perfectly clean. Give it a good washing on the outside and remove personal items and clutter from the inside. It is also a good idea to vacuum any rugs inside the car. If you notice any damage during this time, or any other time as you prepare the car, photograph and document the area for your records.

Step 2: Prepare Your Car’s Liquids

There are a couple things you should consider when it comes to the liquids in your car. The most important factor is the safety of the car and other items on the van. No hazardous or flammable liquids are allowed on a moving van, as gas is an explosive. Even so, cars must retain a small amount of fuel. It’s recommended to reduce the gas in a car down to 1/4th or 1/8th of a tank for safety.

Other liquids, such as windshield wiper fluid and oil, should be topped off before moving day.

Step 3: Secure Loose or Fragile Parts

If you have any specialty parts attached to your car, such as a spoiler, make sure you remove or secure them before transit. If you can, fold back your side mirrors and lower your antennae.

Make sure all windows, moon roofs and convertible roofs are closed and secured. If there are any holes, open seems or gaps in the windows, make sure you cover those areas with a well-fitting tarp. This will prevent air or moisture from causing damage to the car.

Step 4: Compile a list of Operational and Physical Damage

Make note of any damage or current problems for your car. Notify your mover of any operational issues in case they need to move your car in an emergency. Keep this documentation close at hand, as you will need it when your car is delivered. Upon delivery, do a full inspection of your car and compare its condition to your documentation. Be sure to notify the mover of any issues you see before signing any documentation accepting delivery.
