Are you moving from New York to California?
If so—or seriously considering it—you’re among the many. (Or at least the kind-of-a-lot.) Once the destination, New York now is proving to be the departure point.
Like playing the song “New York, New York” in reverse (just without all the backwards-masking tricks), people are looking to “make a brand-new start of it” elsewhere. In the Sinatra classic 2020 rewind-o remix, people seek their fortunes by leaving Brooklyn, the Bronx, Manhattan, Queens and Staten Island.
Escape from New York
Why is the Big Apple getting a rotten-to-the-core reputation? (To be fair, this exodus involves the entire Empire State, not just its biggest city.) Hint: The most-cited reason involves Washingtons, Lincolns and Jacksons. Yep, it’s all about the all-mighty dollar.
U.S. Census Bureau stats show New York state lost 180,306 individuals during July 2017–July 2018 while 131,746 people became residents. This 48,560 difference between comers and goers was the biggest of any state. Upstate New York is reportedly really feeling the evacuation as 42 of 50 counties have experienced population declines since 2010.
Nearly 300 people are leaving NYC daily, an August 2019 Bloomberg report stated: “New York leads all U.S. metro areas as the largest net loser with 277 people moving every day—more than double the exodus of 132 just one year ago.”
Yes, New York’s cost of living is clobbering people in to submission and out of the city (or state). That’s being kind, at least when compared to Forbes Senior Contributor Jack Kelly’s mince-no-words analysis. “The costly living expenses, crumbling infrastructure and high tax rates are a big problem for residents,” Kelly stated. “If you live in NYC, you are forced to pay exorbitant taxes. The schools, bridges, tunnels, trains, airports and hospitals are falling apart. Casually walk the streets of NYC and you’ll notice that they are crowded and dirty.”
Ouch!
